A worker in a meat packing plant in Chile quit and disappeared after receiving over 300 times his normal monthly salary by mistake!
The worker, a dispatch assistant at cold meats manufacturer Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos, received a paycheck of 165,398,851 Chilean pesos, or $180,418, for the month of May. He was only supposed to be paid about 500,000 Chilean pesos, or $545.
The worker initially alerted his manager of the massive overpayment, according to local media outlet Diario Financiero.
The manager would then report the issue to human resources, who asked the worker to go to his bank and return the extra money.
Initially, the man agreed to go to the bank the next day, but instead, he kept the money and ignored further communications from his employer over the next few days.
The man then offered his resignation through a letter sent to the company by his attorney. The worker has not been heard from since, Diario Financiero reported.
The name of the man or his attorney have not been released.
Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos has filed a complaint against the worker, alleging he was misappropriating funds, but no arrests have been made so far.
In the US this is know as stealing
Or winning the lottery.
The mistake was on the part of the account department and not the person who received the check. If the mistake was by the department, we all know that the department is insured. Why bother the man instead of the account department. The account department should bear the loss and let the worker enjoy a windfall.
To Daniel Smalls; The worker did NOT steal the money. He was mistakenly given an overpayment, but that mistake was the fault of the manufacturer, not the worker.
If i ever received the check I would not even bother to inform the supervisor I would just put it in the bank and tell no one, in case the account department came to realize their mistake i would say it is my money and you can claim the money from your insurance to rectify the mistake. What do we have insurance for anyway;
