Why These 7 Republicans Voted to Convict Trump Despite GOP Backlash

Seven Republican senators joined with Democrats in voting to convict former President Donald Trump at the conclusion of his second impeachment trial.

Trump has been acquitted of inciting an insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6. The GOP defections nevertheless stand as a sharp rebuke of the former President.

The Republicans who voted for conviction were:

Richard Burr of North Carolina
Bill Cassidy of Louisiana
Susan Collins of Maine
Lisa Murkowski of Alaska
Mitt Romney of Utah
Ben Sasse of Nebraska
Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.

The vote was 43 not guilty to 57 guilty — short of the 67 guilty votes needed to convict Trump.

Richard Burr, who is not running for reelection next year, said, in part, in a statement: “The President promoted unfounded conspiracy theories to cast doubt on the integrity of a free and fair election because he did not like the results. As Congress met to certify the election results, the President directed his supporters to go to the Capitol to disrupt the lawful proceedings required by the Constitution. When the crowd became violent, the President used his office to first inflame the situation instead of immediately calling for an end to the assault.”

He went on to say, “As I said on January 6th, the President bears responsibility for these tragic events. The evidence is compelling that President Trump is guilty of inciting an insurrection against a coequal branch of government and that the charge rises to the level of high Crimes and Misdemeanors. Therefore, I have voted to convict.”

Bill Cassidy said in a brief statement: “Our Constitution and our country is more important than any one person. I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty.”

Susan Collins explained her vote in a speech on the Senate floor, saying, in part: “My vote in this trial stems from my own oath and duty to defend the Constitution of the United States. The abuse of power and betrayal of his oath by President Trump meet the Constitutional standard of high crimes and misdemeanors and for those reasons, I voted to convict.”

Lisa Murkowski, who is slated to face voters again in her state as soon as 2022: told reporters later Saturday that she understands her decision to vote to convict Trump could come with electoral consequences but argued she made a decision she thought was best.

“It’s not about me,” Murkowski said in part. “It’s not about me and my life, my job, this is really about what we stand for. And if I can’t say what I believe that our president should stand for, then why should I ask Alaskans to?”

Mitt Romney said, in part, in a statement: “President Trump incited the insurrection against Congress by using the power of his office to summon his supporters to Washington on January 6th and urging them to march on the Capitol during the counting of electoral votes. He did this despite the obvious and well known threats of violence that day. President Trump also violated his oath of office by failing to protect the Capitol, the Vice President, and others in the Capitol.”

Ben Sasse said, in part, in a lengthy statement on his vote: “On election night 2014, I promised Nebraskans I’d always vote my conscience even if it was against the partisan stream. In my first speech here in the Senate in November 2015, I promised to speak out when a president — even of my own party — exceeds his or her powers. I cannot go back on my word, and Congress cannot lower our standards on such a grave matter, simply because it is politically convenient. I must vote to convict.”

Pat Toomey, who is not running for reelection next year: told reporters on a call later Saturday that Trump will “be remembered throughout history as the President who resorted to non-legal steps to try to hold onto power.”

Rejecting the arguments from Trump’s defense team that the former President’s conduct was protected under the First Amendment and that the trial itself was unconstitutional because he was out of office, said: “No president, or anyone else, has the First Amendment right to incite a violent attack on our government,” and that there was “an overwhelming body of evidence that suggests” the trial was “constitutionally permissible,” noting that the Constitution gives the Senate the “sole power to try all impeachments.”

What Happens Now?

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) has already been censured by the Louisiana GOP for his vote to convict former President Donald Trump in his impeachment trial Saturday, keeping with a trend across the country, in which Republicans breaking with Trump have faced backlash at home. It appears the Nebraska Republican Party may take the same route with Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.).

Meanwhile, two other senators who joined Cassidy and Sasse in voting to convict — Sens. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) — faced rebukes from the Republican parties in their home state, but so far, it seems, the parties are stopping short of voting to censure.

The Utah GOP’s executive director Laurel Price told Forbes the party doesn’t have a statement on Sen. Mitt Romney’s (R-Utah) vote to convict, adding “I’m not certain about a censure effort just yet.”

Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) round out the group of seven GOP lawmakers who voted guilty. There’s been no word from their state parties as of yet, but Murkowski is up for re-election in 2022, making her the first of the seven (Burr and Toomey are retiring) to face the ballot box test.

You should do as the Democrats do, vote party line regardless. Clinton was Guilty but did the Democrat vote guilty. No, they will vote with party regardless of right or wrong. Republicans have got to go along with their voting and vote per Republicans.

The people who did most of the rioting and damage were not Trump supporters but persons paid to create havoc and pretend to be his supporters!! Paid for by Pelosi, Soros and others in the SWAMP!!

Well the republicans that voted against trump voted against the Republican Party and all us who voted Republican they all need to be replaced with true republicans there just there to keep there pay check trump is the best we have had just look at the dumb bastards we have now trying to fuck the country up

These 7 Republicans and the 10 members of the house who voted against Trump and tossed their hat into the ring to support Joe Biden, knowing the he is corrupt and and totally compromised in addition to not having cognitive abilities for the job of being President have sealed their own doom for any political office for the future by revealing to the whole world their interests are not what’s best for America and Americans but for their own self importance. They will get a welcoming hand from the press and the democrats but they will not get a welcoming hand from God who is still over all human efforts and endeavors.

These rinos are enemies of the country. Our country is being destroyed by our DC rino republicans and dembocrats scumbags. They should be prosecuted for treason, convicted and dealt the punishment.

All of these asses should be thrown out of the Republican Party. They obviously do not understand the Constitution. They are dumb as dirt if they think they were defending the Constitution. I pray none of them will ever be elected to office again.

Hard to understand why these 7 legislators who are there to uphold the Constitution are literally braindead when they did not understand the law involved in this situation . Are they as knee deep in the SWAMP as the Democrats ?

I think they all need to be recalled especially the one fron Utah . They didn’t bother to ask us the people how to vote they repersent us not themselves. But Romney has been a traitor since he got in the senate I keep hoping Utah will recalled him.. I also hope the American people will wake up knowing how the election was stolen and do the right thing next time.

All those who stabbed Mr.Trump in the back and are facing re-election should be challenged and then voted out of office. I will be contributing heavily to all who oppose them on the ballot. I’m sure the Democratic Communist Party will welcome these RINOs with open arms. Good riddance.

For these 7 and others that were not mentioned even voting for impeachment was wrong and all of those need to be removed from the Senate and Congress.

We need people in those positions that are there for the people, not their building wealth on the backs of the American people. SO many lives could have been saved if not for these people to get rich and watching others die so wrong in so many ways.

Thank God Toomey is finally going away. All of these years with a Senator who did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Topped only by his cohort Casey who rumor has it passed away 5 years ago but still holds office.

There is nothing wrong with questioning the Nov vote when there were so many changes made at the state levels (going around their own state constitutions) resulting in thin margins.
Additionally, there is no question that there were definite irregularities (ejecting Republican poll watchers and press, ballots crossing state lines, numerous ballots only cast for President and not down ballot, poor monitoring of drop boxes and very loose “new” rules governing signatures and dates…I could go on…
It defies common sense not to question the outcome especially in the few targeted counties that made the difference. It did not have to be “widespread “ fraud—it was very well planned and microtargeted (see Time article admitting as much).
The fear of violence was used to justify suppressing the vote of 74 million Americans. Any violence could have and should have been dealt with immediately. If we let the fear of violence and bullying by the Left take control, we better be prepared to turn into Mexico where the cartels run the show by threatening and delivering violence. Donald Trump did not have to incite anger…we were already angry and frustrated that the Supreme Court did not do their job either before or after the election. We were watching very carefully. The Republican state legislators, governors and Secretaries of State fell far short and should be voted out in the few states where they were fooled or cooperated with the pre election manipulation of the rules. Covid 19 certainly was exploited!
These 7 Senators are cowards and deserve to lose their seats. They certainly like Donald Trump when they want votes but turn on him when scared. They cannot be trusted.

If they understood the Citizens of the United States, they would know why they were there. It was because they never showed that they protected the integrity of our election which is the most important part of their job. Thousands of sworn affidavits went unanswered! The possible corruption of the Dominion Voting machines they left without any analysis and all they said was there wasn’t any fraud. Really! Biden said, “We have put together, I think, the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the History of American politics!” Is Biden a liar? Is he a complete moron? Maybe both! I believed him! A complete investigation into this election is necessary for the integrity of the American voter!

These RINOS will find themselves looking for employment in a different area. It will not be forgotten nor forgiven they broke ranks and did their best to injure the best President in 100 years. Elections and impeachments have consequences and they have decided to voluntarily jump into the volcano. Name any other President who has accomplished more for the American people and America the nation in such a short time. He has faced our enemies successfully while the Dems have done NOTHING but try to destroy him. These clowns joined the enemy and will pay the price.

Based on the comments made none of the senators believed election fraud occurred in the States of Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia as well as other States such as Nevada and Arizona! The supporters were in Washington DC to indicate that Biden should not be elected as the next President with out a careful examination of the cases of election fraud. The GOP senators should have met with Trump supporters and given their support to examine the cases of election fraud. Instead they hid in the Capitol Building! We know that many of the Trump supporters and their family members have been threaten with bodily harm. The FBI should have investigated the situation. Instead leadership indicated that fraud did not exist! The Democratic Party is responsible for the election fraud and the threats to supporters of Trump and GOP members!

Those Republicans that went against Trunp doesn’t deserve been republican they are piece of shit. President Trunp have been the best President in the history of the the United States. President Trump is my hero. President Biden is a idiot along VP Camala Harris, there are socialist and does not belong in our society.

They are all anti Trump and have been since he was sworn in as President. They as others in the Democrat side have a hatred that is sick. I hope their constituents never vote for them again. We need to clean the hate out of Congress and start to build this country back up not tear it down leaving it vulnerable to our enemies. like China. I know people in Utah are very unhappy with Romney. He moved to California bought a beautiful home in La Jolla but when he read the extreme liberalism he realized he would never become the Governor which was his plan. He moved back to Utah and used his Mormon connection to get elected to the Senate. He is not a Republican. His only values are Romney Romney. Disgusting. He, nor the other RINO’s care nothing about the people who elected them.

  18. Rich

A free and fair election? Are these Senators deaf, dumb and blind? There’s a ton of evidence to prove otherwise. They just ignored it and did nothing! It makes me sick that these are the people We put our trust in to uphold the Constitution and protect our freedoms.

I will be sending a letter to Bill Cassidy! They all asked for President Trump when they were seeking re-election and then they turned against him. The problem is that President Trump was not the cause of this event; it goes to show they did not know what is going on around them. Which shows to me they do not know what is happening in their job; representing the American People. It has even been reported that even A.O.C. said that Congress knew they might have been attacked several weeks before. I hope someone from Louisiana will step up to run against him. That person I will vote for. I watch the President’s speech and nowhere does he say, “Go out and attack Congress!” If he had, I would be the first to attack him. I hope that people from other states would right and tell them, “Walk Away from Your Job, I will not vote for you!”

may ALL these RINOs get PRIMARIED . . . it would be WORTH financing this! One Enlightened And HOPEFUL Patriot. Team Trump And His Allies 2020 – MAGA (WE’RE NOT Going Away!).

  21. Steve

They all should be censured by their respective state GOP organizations. And those running for office next will be, hopefully, voted out of office and replaced by republicans that are knowledgeable of the constitution than they are. The impeachment rules in the constitution apply to those holding current offices only. Not to private citizens once they have left office. Those 7 Republicans joined the additional HUA vengeful democrats in a hate filled sham trial. And McConnell should be replaced as GOP leader for his remarks after the sham trial.

  22. Raymond

This impeachment didn’t work again, I wonder what the democrats will come up with next. They are very afraid of Trump, he may run again.
I do not see Biden completing a year, the democrats will declare him mentally unfit. Harris will take over as president and can choose anyone, perhaps Hillary, as replacement VP. Heaven forbid.

  23. G bassett

We all here in the democracy are so sorry that this country allows entities of his nature to, not only escape punishment but, garner support. Long may his wallowing stupidity be avoided.

  24. Jack

Those creatures are not Republicans. They are RINOS scialists and the people who voted them in office to represent the should take notice and vote them out.

  25. Wanda Frost

Great don’t bother to get these back into office. Really need to get get rid of DUMB ASS, HATEFUL, DISRESPECTFUL, TRASH, SHIT ROMNEY.

  26. Spike

My disappointment with President Trump is that after the left leading rioting, destruction, looting, in the past year and getting a pass from “every?” high ranking democratic because they looked on them as beneficial to themselves staying or getting in power that those same violent actors would very like take advantage of such a publicized event in order to keep things stirred up. He didn’t in anyway incite violence because with a whole lot of personal testaments he believed that there was certainly more than the ordinary fraud, at the least. The democrats did worse than that for his campaign and then tried on and on to accomplish what they hoped would be accepted as a “legal” coup against him. All of those who have a conscience and went ahead and decided to hit u9k with one last bludgeon from the swamp that apparently leads and controls this country!! Well, they will live and be judged in history!

  27. robert adams

The punishment for impeachment is to REMOVE the the sitting person from office. Mr. Trump had already left office. At that time congress has no power over a civilian. The impeachment was NOT in the power of the Constitution. This all could have been avoided if SCOTUS would have done their job!

  28. dimento

Seven republican morons with no knowledge of the constitution or the facts. A mafia hit man or mafia boss gets more rights than the president. No right to address or counter all evidence with a defense. How can these morons call their self righteous hate called defending the constitution when he was impeached in 6 hours with no rights a cold blooded killer would get and even get completely off on a technicality like not reading him his Maranda rights. These 7 are puking on the constitution and also killing 74+ million American citizens for their beliefs. All well informed constitutional lawyers that are nonpartisan experts have stated this was not constitutional. I can name Levin, Derschowitz, and Turley for starters. What I do know, the election was massive fraud, covered up by the hateful left and Rhinos abetted by SCOTUS Roberts and fake news Goebelles Nazi propaganda media out of insanity against anything good and usurping the best president in history for 4 long years and keep doing it as long as they have any political power or position. So these 7 can stick these facts where the sun don’t shine as they are Nazi/ fascist or soviet/china communist enablers not unlike what lead to WWI and WWII, genocide, and 100 million plus dead from summary executions, starvation, and slave labor. Thus in fairness the same fate should be given to these 7. They are just Trump haters pulling a coup to overthrow the president duly elected by 74 million and let a military tribunal put them through a military court, along with about 4-5 dozen other low lifers that support the destruction of America and the constitution/bill of rights since Trump was and still is the fairly elected president while these haters can’t get over 2016 and planned the 2020 election coup starting with Biden, Harris, Obama, Clinton, Comey, Brennan, Clapper, Zucherberg, Dorsey, Bezos, and Soros. We are heading for civil war as I see it. Six months of BLM and antifa with other anarchists the left called “just harmless protesters” destroying American cities and businesses and killing numerous. Dr Mengela Fauci enabling the pandemic, and the hydroxychloroquine coverup which would have saved thousands of lives with early treatment. Drugs and feces everywhere. Illegals mixed with gangs, drug dealers, and sex trade criminals destroying America with leftist sancuary city support. Give me a break. Haven’t heard any complaint about this from these 7 hypocrite Rhinos. Better yet send them to a third world country to live and strip them of their citizenship, they are unworthy of America.
