Survival skills can often be the things that will help get you out of a sticky situation. However, with so many different things for one person to learn, how can you be certain of which life-saving tips are some of the most important ones to learn? Well, if you are unsure of where to start the following list should give you a pretty good indication of the survival skills you should start focusing on.
1. How to Ask for Help in Public
If you find yourself in an emergency while you are out in public then one of the worst things you can do is arbitrarily call for help while there are other people directly in your line of sight. If you want to be more effective in your call for help then try to direct your plea to one specific person in the crowd. This eliminates the chances of the bystander effect as most commonly people will just sit around expecting someone else to reach out and go help the person calling for help.
2. What to Do If you are followed
If you are being followed then begin by taking a right turn four times. This mini circle can often help you lose the person who is following you. If you don’t then don’t go home. Instead, try to head to a public area or even better a police station if there is one around you. The worst thing you can do is go to an area where you will be alone and thus, no one will be around to help you if someone tries to hurt you.
3. What to do when you or someone else is Drowning
Drownings are extremely common and in part that is because people don’t know what to do to keep themselves from drowning. If you aren’t sure how to swim and you get into deep water then try not to panic and instead calm down and focus your mind on floating. This will help you feel much better and should keep you above the water.
If you are helping someone else who is in the water then try to use any object you can find to grab onto them and help them float to the surface. When you first make contact from behind, put one hand on their chest. You should also keep their arms away from you as in their panic they might hurt you.
