Chicago officials raised bridges and suspended some train and bus service Monday morning after unrest and looting caused widespread damage in the city’s downtown overnight.
Videos that were circulating on social media captured the early morning scenes of hundreds of people in the streets, dozens of police officers, looting, and confrontations with the police. There was also an exchange of gunfire with the police in the downtown, according to a police spokesman, Tom Ahren. He said on Twitter early Monday that there were “shots fired at police who returned fire,” and that no officers were injured. He said it was “unknown at this time if offenders were shot.”
In some of the videos, people can be seen entering various businesses, and local TV stations showed storefronts vandalized, windows smashed and sidewalks littered with boxes. In one widely viewed recording of the protests, police officers can be seen confronting a group of people in the street when someone hurled an object at one of the officers, striking him in the face. He and other officers then charged the people, who fled.
A police spokeswoman said on Monday that the details of the overnight violence, including any arrests and damage, would be announced at 8 a.m. local time by the police superintendent, David Brown, and by the city’s mayor, Lori Lightfoot. The mayor’s office was not available to comment early on Monday.
The Chicago Transit Authority said Monday morning that at least half a dozen bus and train lines were shut down “at the request of public safety officials.”
The city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications alerted residents of street closures early Monday morning due to police activity.
The looting came several hours after officers exchanged fire with a person on Sunday afternoon, a shooting that drew protests.
On Sunday, officers were called at about 2:30 p.m. to investigate reports of a man with a gun, the department said. Officers confronted the person in an alley, he fled and then opened fire, the department said in a statement.
“Officers then discharged their firearms, striking the offender,” the statement said, adding that the condition of the person, taken to the University of Chicago hospital, was not known.
Three officers were taken to a hospital for “observation,” it said. The department has opened an investigation into the shooting.

Just start shooting them, after the first few go down the rest will leave.
WHY STOP SHOOTING..???
right on.
Just a peaceful protest!!!
Way to go Chicago. Guess you should have put a stop to this way sooner instead of letting the rioters have their way with your city. I hope the government doesn’t give you money to fix all this because you are to blame for it. Why do you insist on letting these terrorists run over your city and destroy it. It’s time to stop this once and for all.
When is the government going to do something about this enough is enough no more do something.
Loser socialists are behind all this violence… REMEMBER THIS IN NOVEMBER…. KEEP AMERICA GREAT…
Well Chicagoans…here’s the result of 100 YEARS of dimwit leadership in your once-beautiful city. Your ‘deer-in-the-headlights-beetle-juice-mayor’ WILL go on to collect her million $ pension, long after you (the tax payer) are burdened with the cost of it all. Her only objective (even after what you see has been done to your city) is to get re-elected. My guess…she will.
After what is happening in Chicago, Portland, Seattle, etc. is this what you WANT for YOUR city, town or state?!? . . . This is what you’ll get with Joe Biden. DON’T vote for him if you VALUE your country, state OR TOWN! He’s a puppet for the Left Wing COMMUNISTS (just look into Venezuela – NO THANKS!). Team Trump and his allies 2020.
i may be the one fellow in the United States that they don’t want to pull their raciest bull-shit on.
Chicago’s problem, incompetent, pathetic leadership. a mayor not qualified nor capable of doing the job. The use of toilet paper is above her level of intelligent. If she were not fed by taxpayers, she would starve. She is a failure who has caused immeasurable harm to America.
Everyone take care and have a good evening … God Bless all, even Lori Lightbrain.
Our Leaders INCLUDING the MAYOR ” HAS FAILED ” because they are protecting the looters and don’t give a damn about human lives and they are the ” DEMOCRATS ‘. And yet when the elections come they will vote again for democrats. They are EVIL and POISON to and for our society. They are showing our young society how the world will look like in future. The people are blind and their own ignorance will destroy everything that our ancestors accomplished and build. To all democrats I do hope you are proud for being IGNORANT to our society.
As along time member of the Radiological Society of North America and a frequent attendee of the RSNA annual meeting (the largest medical meeting in the world) that has been held in Chicago for over 30 years, I will strongly recommend that Chicago be abandoned from future use for our meeting. Chicago is a dangerous place run by corrupt leaders and no longer deserves our patronage. Probably a safer venue can be found in another state. Texas may be a possibility for this annual meeting with its lucrative monetary value to the local economy in the week after Thanksgiving.
Great job mayor lightfoot! Maybe its time to ask for those federal officers as well as the military. You have lost control of a once great city.
Mayor Lightfoot and the Democratic council have MUCH to politically and financial gain from the demise of Chicago. When Downtown residents are raided by the mobs and forced out, they then can take over the property at NO cost for their purposes. Even when the Lakefront Park is closed, they can sell off ALL the statues as scrap metal for their pockets. After ALL the raids, riots, murders and destruction happen, the big sell off of Chicago is benefitting ONLY those corrupt crony Democrats who will take the booty and flee this city to be left in ruins.
