Dementia can be a condition that leads to a lot of suffering for both you and your loved ones. While there is no definitive way to stop severe cognitive decline, there are a few different things you can do to keep your brain vibrant and prevent Dementia later in life. This will help you be healthier and happier both now and in the future.

1. Regular exercise

Exercise has been shown to be one of the key ways of reducing the chances of getting dementia later in life. In fact, regular exercise can help reduce the chances of dementia by 30% and the risk of Alzheimer’s down by 45%. This is on top of all of the other benefits of helping you maintain a healthier weight and better blood pressure that come with exercise.

2. Healthy diet

Following a healthy diet can be incredibly important for keeping healthy. The National Institute on Aging recommends a variation of the Mediterranean diet, with a heavy focus on plant-based foods for reducing the risks of dementia.

3. Healthy weight

Research by the International Journal of Epidemiology has shown that there is a link between obesity and developing dementia, this link remains the same regardless of other negative habits such as smoking, or genetic predispositions to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease that you may have.

4. Be a lifelong learner

There is no better way of keeping your brain active than by continuing to learn. Even as you age, having intellectual pursuits can help keep your brain functioning at the highest degrees. Reading, puzzles and even picking up new skills can all help you prevent dementia.
