They have been the tropes of science fiction for decades, so-called “parallel universes” where everything is almost exactly the same as this one with some varations. These alternate realities or “mirror universes” are said to exist along side our own, but in a different plane of space-time.
The idea of these mirror worlds may have made for some very fun and exciting books, movies and TV shows, but to most of us, seem pretty far-fetched.
However, there is one group of scientists that believes these parallel universes are very real. Researcher Leah Broussard not only believes such mirror-verses exist, she and her colleagues at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, think that if they can locate one, they can open a portal to it!
Broussard is attempting to open a portal to a parallel universe by what she calls “oscillation” which would eventually lead her to mirror matter. To conduct these experiments during the upcoming summer, Broussard will send a beam of subatomic particles down a 50-foot tunnel, past a powerful magnet, and into an impenetrable wall.
If that sounds a lot like the way a group of nefarious Russian scientists were trying to “open the gate to the Upside-down” in this summer’s runaway blockbuster series “Stranger Things 3,” you are not very far from the truth!
Broussard’s particle beam ray, much like the one depicted on “Stranger Things,” has been designed to open a doorway into a parallel universe. If the charger of her beam and the strength and spin of the magnetic field are calibrated precisely right, then if the setup is just right, some of those particles will transform into mirror-image versions of themselves, allowing them to phase or tunnel right through the wall – into the adjacent universe.
If it works, this would be the first proof of a mirror universe. The whole experiment will only take around a day but analyzing the data will take many weeks afterward. Either way, it won’t be long before the results are published.
Scientists are anxiously awaiting the results of Brossard’s experiments. They could change everything we think we know about the fabric of reality – but let us all hope and pray that they do not release any Demogorgons in the process!
