Republican Rep Calls for Impeachment of Trump

In a surprise move, a Republican Congressman has become the first in his party to publicly call for the impeachment of President Trump.

Justin Amash, of Michigan, tweeted Saturday that impeachment “should be undertaken only in extraordinary circumstances,” but that Trump has committed “impeachable conduct.”

He also said Attorney General William Barr intentionally misled the public about the report of special counsel Robert Mueller.

Amash tweeted that the report established “multiple examples” of Trump obstructing justice.

Amash told CNN he is considering a third party run for president as a Libertarian.

But, since calling for Trump’s impeachment, Amash’s political aspirations may fall very short of the White House, and he should be more concerned about retaining his Congressional seat. Fox News has learned that since making his impeachment comments, now Amash faces a challenge in his upcoming primary election.

Amash’s Impeachment Comments Lead to Primary Challenge

Less than 48 hours after Amash mad his damning statement that President Trump “engaged in impeachable conduct,” a fellow Republican has vowed to challenge him in the upcoming primary election.

Michigan State Rep. Jim Lower announced that instead of seeking a third term in the state legislature, he will run against Amash for their party’s nomination for the 2020 election. Amash has served as the representative for Michigan’s Third District since 2011.

“Congressman Justin Amash tweets calling for President Trump’s impeachment show how out of touch he is with the truth and how out of touch he is with people he represents,” Lower said, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Lower, who described himself as “pro-Trump,” said he was already planning to challenge Amash, and was originally going to declare his candidacy on July 4. Amash’s recent tweets against the president, inspired Lower to make the announcement sooner, he said. Lower accused Amash of siding with left-wing Democrats against Trump.

“Amash has not only failed to support President Trump as the President works to make the United States stronger and safer, he has now united with radical liberals like Democratic Congresswomen Rashida Tlaib to try and bring down our President,” he said. “He must be replaced and I am going to do it.”
