There is no other feeling in the world quite like losing a parent. It is that moment when you realize that you will never be able to speak to them again, or hug them and be around them. Regardless of how old you are, your parents will always hold a very special place in your heart.

If you are trying to find ways to come to terms with the loss of your parents then here are a few steps you can take that will hopefully let you feel better.

1. Your feelings are valid

Whether you feel sad or not. Whether you feel numb, or relieved that they went peacefully and aren’t in pain, or whether you are frustrated by how they went, everything you feel is valid. They were a big part of your life growing up and your complex relationship does not require you to explain to anyone how you feel. Just know that what you feel is valid and completely alright to feel.

2. Don’t shield yourself from experiencing the loss

Many people will either shield themselves from the loss altogether, or they will only allow themselves to feel grief for a short period of time. This is not what you should do. Instead, you should recognize that every single person needs to grieve in their own way. There is also no specific timeline, as some people may need to grieve for longer. Allow yourself to experience the loss and feel how you feel for as long as you need. This will help you move towards healing faster.

3. Take Care of yourself

Just because you are grieving it does not mean that you should let yourself be uncared for. Eating well, and staying healthy can be really helpful when you are processing grief. Always try to find moments for yourself while you grieve.
